Costa Teguise, Lanzarote

Costa Teguise is Lanzarote´s northern most resort.  And is ideally situated for anyone planning to explore the islands key cultural and tourist attractions.  Such as the Jameos del Agua, the Cactus Garden and the Mirador del Rio.

Costa Teguise was created back in the 1970´s under the aegis of Cesar Manrique, the artist and architect who helped shape controlled development on the island as package tourism started to take off on Lanzarote.

Manrique´s basic concept was to create a coastal sister to Teguise, the islands historic former capital which lies some 10km inland.

Initially the resort was anchored around the development of the first five star hotel in Lanzarote – The Gran Melia Salinas.  Which won many plaudits and awards and which is still one of the leading hotels on the island to this day.

Not least because of the incredible interior gardens created by Manrique – a design flourish since copied by numerous other establishments the world over.

A few years after the opening of the Gran Melia development continued with the creation of the Pueblo Marinero – Manrique´s interpretation of a traditional Canarian fishing village. Which still provides the main focal point for the resort today and which plays host to a regular market every Friday evening.

Since the 1980´s Costa Teguise has become a somewhat sprawling resort – stretching almost as far along the coast as the island capital Arrecife.  With some visitors commenting that it is hard to find the organic heart of the town – reflecting its man made origins to some degree.

However on the plus side Costa Teguise is home to no less than five excellent beaches – all of which are united by coastal walkway.  Playa Cucharas is Costa Teguise´s main beach – providing ample space for both sunbathers and windsurfers alike.

Whilst Playa Bastian is much favoured by locals, thanks to the fact it enjoys a more sheltered position from the trade winds that blow across the island from March through to August.

Costa Teguise also boasts a very good choice of top quality restaurants, amongst which Meson La Jordana and Oscars are real stand outs.  Nightlife in the resort is more limited though – with many younger visitors opting to head into nearby Arrecife or the resort of Puerto del Carmen in search of clubs and bars.

Lanzarote´s only golf course is located just outside the resort – close to the water park, which is again the only such attraction on the island.

And accommodation in the resort comprises a number of good quality hotels – such as the Teguise Playa.  Whilst there is also a decent choice of apartments and holiday villas in Costa Teguise for tourists to choose from.
